In a previous life (or two years ago) I had decided that I wanted to develop a product to help improve the efficiency of HVAC units. There were two reasons the product did not get off the ground. First, the market wasn’t big enough to warrant the time and money to go through with it.
Second, and almost as important, finding a way into the HVAC industry was not easy. I went to trade shows, and the Chamber of Commerce, but to my surprise…
no one was willing to help.
I will admit that this happened prior to me learning how powerful social media can be for developing a business.
Personally, I value some contacts more than others. Those I can help and those who can help me are more important than just someone to sling ideas back and forth.
While I understand the value of having 10,000 followers on Twitter, over 500 LinkedIn contacts and 5,000 Facebook friends, I argue that the select few you become intimate with are infinitely more valuable than the masses.
It’s nice to have a large network. It’s mutually beneficial to have a few targeted contacts.
As always, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Greg, I agree with you. I’ve been saying the same thing for ages. Size doesn’t matter! What does matter is talking to people about something they care about. I keep getting catalogs from a shipping supply company. I don’t ship large packages, and don’t need their supplies. But, they keep wasting time (and money) sending me those catalogs.
