Marketing on a Budget

by Greg Digneo

I’ve been reading various posts in forums asking for advice for marketing their business on a budget.  My advice to them is this:  Be of value.

One person wanted to know how they can market his technology services business.  My advice to him was this:  Join every networking event that you can, and meet people.  For me, that would include Entrepreneur forums, SBDC, NJEDA, and a host of others.  On the back of his business card, he should print the top three ways to keep your computer virus free – or something along those lines.  *This gives people a reason to keep your business card.

Once he has networked for a few months, he should sign up to be a speaker.  However, his speech should be titled “Cost effective ways to maximize technology” while not making it out to be a sales pitch.  At the end of the presentation, he would have a pamphlet that outlines his presentation to give everyone in the audience, in exchange for a business card.  This does two things; 1) it forces him to have direct contact with qualified leads, and 2) he gives his qualified leads a great parting gift.

I’ve seen this work time and time again.  I would love to hear your thoughts!
