Yesterday, I was co-speaking at an event on Social Media marketing. I left the event feeling that I might not have done my job. You see, at the event, we got so mired in the details of RSS and how to hook your blog to your twitter account to your Facebook fan page.
We received one question from a woman selling Mary Kay products that went something like this “How do I get an RSS link on my blog.” Mind you, she doesn’t have a blog yet. Unfortunately, that’s the wrong question to ask.
The right questions to ask is what do my consumers want to see, and how can I reach them?
When you start out with a goal – especially a technically oriented goal – you seem to forget about the obstacles and focus only on the possibilities. This eliminates paralysis.
Yes, you are going to screw up. So screw up as quickly and as cheaply as possible. And keep your eyes on the overall goal.
Yesterday, we needed to focus on this woman’s real problem: Developing content that her customers want to consume, and figuring out how to distribute that content. Everything else will take care of itself.
