Should you create an iPhone/Android and iPad application?

by Greg Digneo

Personally, I think it depends.  I know you are thinking “Great, Greg, thanks for the brilliant answer.”  So just bear with me for a second.

I think if you are looking to make money squarely on the “App Bubble”, you’ve probably missed the boat.  The iPhone has over 100,000 apps in its store, and the Android is building momentum quickly.  It would take a lot of time, money and luck to stand out and create a high revenue product.  It’s probably not worth your time or money.

(As I’m writing this, I know that some entrepreneurs will buck the trend and make money by building an application without an actual business.  I believe that this will become the exception, not the rule.)

However, a mobile application might be a great way to market, and extend the services of your current business.  This is by no means a get rich quick scheme.  But, integrated with a strong marketing strategy, the mobile app will be another way to interact with your users and “spread the word” about your business.
